The Most Common Interview Question
Perhaps one of the most commonly asked interview questions, "Tell me about yourself" sets the tone for the rest of the interview.
So it's important to know how you should approach this question and what potential employers want to hear.
Preparing for this question in an interview is the first step to increasing your confidence and reducing anxiety so you have the best shot at getting hired.
Part 1: Article, Questions, Script

Write a "Tell Me About Yourself" Script
Write a paragraph covering the following in the same Word doc above:
- Begin by talking about past experiences and proven success
- Next, mention your strengths and abilities
- Conclude with a statement about your current situation

Part 2: Practice x 3
With a partner or using a mirror, answer the question as if you are in an interview – "Tell me about yourself."
- Do not read from a script
- You should be prepared
- look into the eyes of your partner or your eyes in the mirror
- speak with confidence!

Role Play
With a different partner, assume the role of a manager interviewing a potential employee.
- Shake hands, look each other in the eye, and introduce yourselves
- Sit face-to-face (across from each other)
- Sit up straight, don't fidget, or play with your hands or hair
- Manager says: "Mr. (fill in the black here), tell me about yourself."
- Potential employee answers
- MANAGER – critique your partner's performance
- Tell him/her at least ONE positive thing you observed
- Tell him/her at least ONE thing he/she could work on
- Switch roles when finished
Part 3: Tell Me About Yourself Video
Record a video of yourself answering the "tell me about yourself" question.
- You can record yourself in the mirror or have someone record for you
- Use whatever video recording device you have available, i.e., phone, video camera, Go Pro
- Minimum length: 1 minute
- Maximum length: 90 seconds (1 minute 30 seconds)
- MUST be saved as an MP4
