Part 1: Current Events

Create a new Word document – the following will all be completed in the same document.

CNN Student News (list this as a heading in your Word doc)

  1. Watch CNN Student News for today, March 1st
    • Issues with the video playing? Try the following:
      1. Update your Flash Player
      2. Use a different browser – Chrome seems to have the most problems with playing the CNN News video
      3. If you still can't get the video to work properly, then go to the CNN News main page and watch at least 3 different current event stories that are 3-4 minutes long
  2. Write a summary of the entire broadcast from today (3/1) defining all the national and international news that is shown. Tell the who(s), what(s), where(s), when(s), why(s) and how(s)
  3. Write a pargraph detailing your reaction(s) to the segment

The New Yorker (list this as a heading in your Word doc)

Read the following:

  1. ReadThe Shameless Expediency of President Trump's Address to Congress (list this as a sub-heading under "The New Yorker")
    • Write a summary of the article (1 paragraph
    • Your reaction and/or position/opinion (1 paragraph)
  2. Read Trump calls on Democrats, Republicans to come together in speech to Congress
    • Write a summary of the article (1 paragraph
    • Your reaction and/or position/opinion (1 paragraph)
  3. The Three Failures of Trump's Speech
    • Write a summary of the article (1 paragraph
    • Your reaction and/or position/opinion (1 paragraph)
  4. Compartmentalize what you read by answering the following questions:
    1. Compare and contrast the three articles – analyze each author's writing style by paying particular attention to word choice.
    2. How would you describe the intent or purpose of each article?
    3. How did the articles use quotes from the President's speech or quotes from individuals to underscore or provide context to the author's writing strategy?

Remember to complete all the work and email them in as attachments in order to get full credit!

NOTE: There is no absolute rule; very short or long paragraphs can work when used by an experienced writer. However, as a guideline, paragraphs should usually be no less that 3-5 sentences long.
