Becoming an Outlier – A 5-Part Series

Part 2: Nobody Does it Alone & Where One Comes From Matters

For this project, you will create a series of posters – 5 total – that will outline the process, or the pathway to becoming an uber successful individual. This is a series, so each poster in the series should fit together – design-wise – as a whole.

Poster 2: Nobody Does it Alone & Where One Comes From Matters

How does one become an "Outlier"? It takes help along the way. Mostly from family, but doesn't necessarily mean it's exclusive – help can from anyone in a person's life who supports and encourages us along the way, such as, coaches, teachers, or mentors of all varieties. And it's not enough to just have smarts either. Recall the story of Robert Langdon and the Termite study. One can have the highest IQ in the world, but if he/she can't navigate "everyday" realities, smarts only gets him/her so far on paper. Where one comes from is just as important as intellectual potential – another facet of accumulative advantage.

Guidelines and Parameters

  1. Document Size: 20" x 30" – 300 Resolution
  2. 1/4" bleed
  3. Establish a design theme you can use for each poster – keep in mind that each poster could be displayed side-by-side as a whole display
    • Use a consistent font strategy – size and type
    • Use consistent imagery – real pictures vs graphics
    • Color scheme might help establish consistency but could be different as long as it's clear each poster fits together as a whole
  4. Keep text simple – you don't need to overload the poster with too much text – it's not an essay after all!
  5. Think Infographic style
  6. Correct Spelling is a MUST
  7. Chapter notes can be found in handouts/CSB/2016-2017/Outliers
